Sauvel

Sauvel is a concept project by fioel. The site of an interior architecture studio in Amsterdam that walks each house room by room, with a drawn plan beside it.

The Sauvel homepage: two photographs of an oak-panelled apartment above the sea, a hall with an oval mirror and a bedroom, on a bone ground.

The problem

An interior studio sells rooms that almost nobody can visit. Its website has to do what a site visit does, and most do the opposite.

The reasoning

  1. 01

    The material decided the layout

The rooms came as one photographer's series of one apartment in one light, almost all portraits. A full-width landscape carousel would have cropped every one, so the rooms sit in pairs of portraits in their own ratio and a landscape only opens each project.

  2. 02

One face, two sizes, no display type

One sans at regular weight in 14 and 20 px on a bone ground, and no display headline at all. The photographs are the only large thing on the site.

  3. 03

A plan instead of a slider

Interior studios present a house to a client as a plan and a walk, so a hairline plan in the margin fills in the room you are standing in, and a click on a room goes there.

  4. 04

    Furniture cut from the rooms

Separate product shots would never have matched the rooms, so every piece is a square crop from the room it was drawn for, and one click opens that square back into the whole photograph.

  5. 05

    Enquire, never buy

Collectible furniture made to order is not put in a basket. Pieces go on an enquiry list that survives a page change, shows dimensions in centimetres or inches, and writes the letter on the contact page.

The solution

Sauvel's site walks five houses in the order you enter them, each with a drawn plan in the margin that marks the room you are in and a material palette cut from its own photographs. Fifteen pieces of furniture sit in three collections; each opens back into the room or exhibition it was photographed in and can be added to an enquiry that follows you to the contact page.

Three features

  1. 01

    The walk

Each of the five houses is shown room by room in the order you enter it, with a drawn plan that fills in the room you are standing in.

  2. 02

    The piece in its room

Every piece of furniture is cut from the photograph of its room, and one click opens the square into that whole room.

  3. 03

    The enquiry list

Pieces added anywhere on the site follow you to the contact page, with their edition and dimensions in centimetres or inches, and become the letter.
